Residency Applications 2025: The Ultimate ERAS Timeline Guide

Residency applications are stressful enough — the last thing you want is to miss a critical ERAS deadline. Strong applications aren’t just about what you submit, but also when you submit. Program directors notice applicants who are early, organized, and polished.

Here’s a practical month-by-month ERAS calendar to help you stay on track for the 2025 Match.

January – March: Lay the Foundation

• Start researching residency programs.

• Make a draft list of specialties and target programs.

• Reach out to potential letter writers early.

April – May: Organize Your Experiences

• Update your CV and gather all research, volunteer, and work details.

• Brainstorm personal statement stories.

• Create a document of publications, presentations, and abstracts.

June – July: Draft & Request Letters

• Write your personal statement first draft.

• Ask faculty for letters of recommendation.

• Register for ERAS when MyERAS opens.

August: Polish and Finalize

• Refine your personal statement and “Most Meaningful Experiences.”

• Proofread every section of your ERAS application.

• Send reminders to letter writers if needed.

September: Submit Early

• ERAS opens for submission (usually early September).

• Aim to submit as close to opening day as possible. Programs notice early, complete applicants.

October – January: Interview Season

• Prepare answers to common residency interview questions.

February: Rank Order Lists
