Calling all International Medical Graduates (IMGs)!
Residency application season is upon us, and it's time to get prepared. This guide tackles the American Association of Medical Colleges (AAMC) Application Service (ERAS) application process, focusing on aspects crucial for IMGs.
Beyond the Online Application:
While the online portion is important, this video dives deeper into the additional components that make your application stand out:
Curriculum Vitae (CV): Detail your educational background, publications, and additional training. Highlight your roles, responsibilities, accomplishments, and specific learnings from each experience. Showcase your diverse skills and contributions relevant to residency programs.
Personal Statement: Craft a compelling story that explains your passion for your chosen specialty and why you're applying to specific programs. Tailor your statement for different specialties and program types (community-based, research-focused). Write early, get feedback from multiple people, and aim for clarity and connection with the reader.
Maximizing Your Chances:
Experiences: Utilize the updated ERAS experience section to your advantage. Include up to 10 experiences, categorize them, and highlight three as the most meaningful. Share significant obstacles you've overcome, your perseverance, leadership, and collaboration skills. Quantify achievements and contributions.
Recommendation Letters: Aim for a diverse set of references who can speak to your clinical skills, research aptitude, and personal attributes. Provide them with information about your achievements, goals, and targeted programs to guide their letters.
Additional Resources:
Medical School Performance Evaluation (MSP): This comprehensive evaluation of your medical school performance is crucial. Ensure your school uploads it to ERAS for all programs.
Residency Interviews and Rank Order List: Programs will send interview invites in late September/October. Check your email and ERAS message center regularly. Prepare for interviews with sample questions provided in the video description.
By following these guidelines and utilizing the provided resources, you'll be well-equipped to navigate the ERAS application process and increase your chances of matching in a residency program.
