Mastering the Post-Match SOAP: Your Second Chance at Residency

The Post-Match Supplemental Offer and Acceptance Program (SOAP) is a structured system by the NRMP that helps unmatched or partially matched applicants secure unfilled residency positions. With over 12,000 applicants competing for about 1,500 spots in 2023, preparation is key to success.

Preparing Before Match Week

Ensure Eligibility:Have an active ERAS account for applications.
Register with NRMP before the rank order list deadline.
IMGs must have USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 CK certification.

Strengthen Your Application:Update your personal statement with any new achievements.
Secure additional letters of recommendation.
Double-check that your ERAS application is accurate and up to date.

Clear Your Schedule:Be available Monday to Thursday during match week.
Keep your phone and email notifications active for interview invites.
Have a trusted person monitor your communication in case you’re unavailable.

Follow SOAP Rules Strictly:Only programs can initiate contact with candidates.
Do not share the unfilled program list with others.
Only eligible candidates should participate.

SOAP Timeline and Strategy

• Monday:At 10 AM ET, match results are released. If unmatched, you enter SOAP.
  At 11 AM ET, ERAS opens, allowing you to submit up to 45 applications.
  
• Tuesday & Wednesday:Programs begin reviewing applications at 8 AM ET.
  Be alert for interview invitations via email or phone and respond immediately.
  
• Thursday:
  Programs send offers in four rounds:9 AM – 11 AM (Round 1)
  12 PM – 2 PM (Round 2)
  3 PM – 5 PM (Round 3)
  6 PM – 8 PM (Round 4)
  If you receive an offer, accept it immediately.
  
• Post-SOAP:If unmatched, an updated unfilled program list is released at 9 AM Friday.
