If there’s one question you can almost guarantee will come up in every residency interview, it’s this: “So, can you tell me about yourself?”
At first, it seems straightforward, but it often trips applicants up. Many aren’t sure how much personal detail to include, how to keep it professional, or how to connect their background to the specialty they’re applying for. Done well, though, this opening question sets the stage for a memorable and positive interview.
A strong response usually blends personality, personal history, and professional achievements into a cohesive story. It should take only two to three minutes, but those minutes matter. They give the interviewer a first impression not just of your resume, but of who you are as a future resident. To illustrate, let’s walk through three example answers tailored for Internal Medicine applicants.
The first example focuses on cultural competency and being a well-rounded applicant. You might say something like: “I actually grew up moving a lot—five countries before I was 18—which I believe has made me more adaptable and genuinely curious about people. Outside of medicine, I enjoy cooking and running. In college, I spent a semester running a community kitchen for the underserved, and I also completed my first half marathon. Professionally, I presented a quality improvement poster at the American College of Physicians regional meeting in Washington, D.C. Going into internal medicine, I bring cultural competency, hard work, and clear communication.” This answer works because it combines personal background, hobbies, and achievements while tying them neatly back to the qualities Internal Medicine values.
The second example frames the applicant as a hands-on, practical problem solver. One way to tell this story is: “I grew up on a small farm, where I learned to fix things and keep going until the job was done. I’ve always been resourceful—I even ran a builder’s club in college where we built furniture and equipment out of basic materials. Later, I volunteered at a free clinic where I helped set up a blood pressure station for underserved patients. These experiences taught me to be steady, reliable, and hands-on, qualities that I hope to carry into my patient care as a resident.” This approach is powerful because it highlights resilience, creativity, and problem-solving, all traits residency programs value.
The third example emphasizes communication and empathy. An applicant could respond with: “I grew up in a big, loud family, and I often became the mediator—the one who listened and brought everyone together. That skill carried over into medicine. For fun, I enjoy salsa dancing, which taught me confidence and how to read the room. In medical school, I volunteered with a refugee health program, guiding families through appointments and conducting bilingual workshops. I believe I am warm, organized, and clear in communication—values that align perfectly with Internal Medicine.” This answer is memorable because it blends personality (salsa dancing) with real-world clinical and community experiences, painting a picture of someone who connects well with others.
Each of these answers takes a different approach, but they all follow the same formula: start with something personal that makes you unique, weave in experiences that demonstrate growth, and finish by connecting your qualities to the specialty you’re pursuing. The key is to sound authentic and confident without rambling or memorizing a script.
In short, “Tell me about yourself” is more than just a warm-up question—it’s an opportunity to make an impression that carries through the rest of the interview. By blending storytelling with specialty alignment, you show programs that you’re not only qualified, but also self-aware, personable, and ready to join their team.
